Restorations

Numerous restorations are planned to celebrate four hundred years of Modena Capital. By the end of 1998 or within the first few months of 1999 some of the most important places in the history of the Estense family will be returned to their former glory and reopened to visitors. The restorations involve Modena Ducal Palace, the Sassuolo Summer Residence, the ground floor of the Palace of Museums the bulwarks of the city stronghold, the Public Theater and various city churches. Some new museum facilities will also be opened to the public including the Sassuolo Palace already mentioned and a Lapidary Museum on the ground floor of the Palace of Museums.

In the case of the Estense residence in Sassuolo, built on behalf of Francesco I at the start of the fourth decade of the XVII century, the plan is to complete the restoration of the sections that have already been underway for some years. It will be possible to visit almost all of the first floor on an itinerary starting from Bacco’s Gallery and including the apartment (so-called)  of Prince Ignazio, the great Salon of Honor, the apartment of the Duchess, and the stuccoed apartment  inside the Duke’s apartment.
Inside the rooms paintings, sculptures and decorations will be displayed. These come from the Estense Gallery foreign museums, or private collections.

Conservation and restoration work is also planned for Modena Ducal Palace. In addition to the work already underway for some years, part of the right wing of the facade will be restored, the completion of renewal the courtyard of honor, and the restoration of the Meeting Hall decorated by the Modena painter Francesco Stringa.

The "Cittadella" stronghold is the only remaining section of the ancient city defenses and it will undergo restoration and functional recovery which should put right a situation of serious degradation and at the same time reshape the communication network of the entire area.

The bulwarks still visible in the western part of the city is the only surviving section of the new fortifications requested by Francesco I and started, based on the plans of Carlo Castellamonte, in 1636. For the large spaces at ground level and services on the floor above a new definition of use for educational and cultural services has already been proposed.

On the ground floor of the Palace of Museums, new facilities will be created for receiving the public, including a reception, book shop, cafe, cloak-room, meeting room, and temporary exhibition hall.

1998 will see the completion of the internal and external restoration of Modena Public Theater and a very significant opera season is planned for the reopening.

Built in 1841 on the design of Francesco Vandelli, it houses paintings and sculpture of various local artists. A meticulous restoration has been underway for a number of years intended to return the theater to it original historical form. In 1998 the restoration of all parts of the avant-corps and external facets are to be completed, elements that today are considerably degraded.

Starting from January restoration will begin on the facade of the Church of the Vow, one of the most interesting remainders of the XVII century in Modena. Inside the church will be an exhibition of valuable sacred decorations.

The restoration of the Church of St. Vincent will allow the facade to be cleaned of grime and return it to its original splendor. The work will also involve part of the inside which will be reopened o the public in 1998.

The Church of St. Paul will also be refurbished for 1998. The restorations involve the vestry and the outsides.

The restoration of the Church of St. Mary of the Angels in Spilamberto will transform it into a space for concerts, conventions, congresses, and exhibitions.

From the 16 May 1998 the hanging garden of Villa Galvini in Vignola will be open to the public. The restoration work and bedding of trees and flowers has restored the original neoclassical lay-out.
