Here at its second encounter, the Talk | Show cycle of meetings focuses on the context in terms of being a habitat for communities as well as on collaboration practices. Deployed by artists with a desire to connect different social groups – or even to create new ones – participatory surveys are in fact ever more widespread across the international research panorama.

The exhibition programme of the Galleria civica di Modena once again provides the starting point from which to highlight transversal artistic realities: the input for these reflections in fact comes from the exhibition ‘Dreams and Conflicts’ by the Slovenian collective IRWIN, curated by Julia Draganović and Claudia Löffelholz (LaRete Art Projects), open to the public from 16th March until 2nd June.

Talk | Show, of which the second encounter will be held at the Palazzina dei Giardini on Thursday 3rd April at 6pm, will thus start out from the emblematic case of the exhibition, of which it will highlight certain aspects and dynamics, continuing in the analysis and sharing with the public of case studies and artistic projects from both the Italian and international panorama.

Starting out from a very particular kind of community, i.e. NSK State in Time – founded in 1992 following the coming together of the various NSK Slovenian artistic movements, including the IRWIN group – the encounter is designed to raise questions on the nature of communities, on the strategies and ways in which they are involved, and on the ethical issues that the use of collaborative practices always entails.

Through ‘Restpfennigaktion / Left-over Penny Campaign’ by Susanne Bosch, ‘Operation Paydirt/Fundred Dollar Bill Project’ by Mel Chin, ‘Ælia Media’ by Pablo Helguera, ‘A life in pictures’ by Kambui Olujimi, ‘Intervention to Aid Drug-Addicted Women’ by WocheKlausur and ‘New Life Copenhagen’ by Wooloo.org, these general issues will be examined, along with the specific themes arising from each of these works.

Furthermore, in order to continue the theoretical examination of the themes at hand, this edition of Talk | Show will also offer the chance to access a bibliography via a number of keywords from the research drawing on literature dedicated to community-based art. In this second encounter, two international realities involved in critical curatorial research and in the support of art in public spaces as well as social and participatory practices will also be examined: ‘A Blade of Grass’ and ‘Situations’.

Talk | Show is held in media partnership with CAMpiTURe.com

Entrance to the initiative is free.

LaRete Art Projects

Founded in 2004 by Julia Draganović and Claudia Löffelholz, LaRete Art Projects is dedicated to research and to supporting new strategies for contemporary art. To this end, it plans and implements exhibition, teaching and research activities both in Italy and abroad.

Among the main interests of the collective are social practices, art in public spaces and in relation to communities, multidisciplinary crossover, the involvement of a new audience and the introduction of contemporary art in heterogeneous contexts.

Since 2010, the collective has held the first International Prize for Participatory Art, now at its second edition thanks to the support of the Legislative Assembly of the Emilia-Romagna Region. In 2011, the LaRete Art Projects platform was joined by the curators Elena Forin and Federica Patti. By building contacts between international professionals, LaRete Art Projects sets out to develop dialogue and collaboration between artists, curators, critics and the public at large – an aim which in 2011 led the group to invite Maddalena Bonicelli, an expert in public relations, to join this collective research project.
