TRANSEUROPEAN 1998

The symposium and the exhibition are one of the most important international event in the field of electric vehicles. It was attended by more than 150 exhibitors coming from 18 countries.
The stand of the City of Modena presented mutilanguage panels illustrating the transport policy of the City; moreover, some electro-muscular vehicles were on display, attracting the visitors' attention.
The City of Modena was the only local authority which participated to the exhibition with its own stand and this represented a first issue of interest for the  visitors.
During the event, the City of Modena officially presented the Speed Bike project, supported by the European Commission in the framework of the Save Programme on energy saving.
The Speed Bike project and the transport policy of the City of Modena have been appreciated for their innovative aspects. This is the reason why many producers of both vehicles and batteries visited the stand, to know more about the City as well as to propose their products.
The participation to this international event allowed the City of Modena to enter the European and international stage with a highly qualified project. The Transport Department developed many contacts, which will be very useful for its future activities, on a local and on a European level.

PARTICIPATION OF THE CITY OF MODENA - SPEED BIKE PROJECT TO THE TRANSEUROPEAN 1998. Departure: Brussels, October 3rd. Arrival: Monte-Carlo, October 15th.

"Transeuropean 1998" is a rally manifestation open for all electric or hybrid vehicles that are allowed to drive on the public road. It started in Brussels on October 3rd, at the end of the international symposium on electric vehicles "A Future for the City".
The main aim of the Transeuropean is to highlight the potentialities of electric vehicles, with special attention to urban mobility, as well as to promote the diffusion of such vehicles to reduce environmental pollution.
The City of Modena, with its Speed Bike team, is the only European local authority which took part to the rally: this arouse great interest both in the organisers and in the visitors. The interest of the organisation for the team was demonstrated by the fact that to ensure their participation, the organisers modified the rules for participants: as a matter of fact, only electric cars were admitted, besides a few three wheels vehicles.

The laps
The Transeuropean was divided into several laps, with a maximum length of 175 km, and the total length of the rally was 1,380 Km.
The group crossed cities which are particularly concerned with electric vehicles, and  was always welcomed by people and by local authorities.
The territory crossed was very different: form the Belgian plains, to the 2,100 m. of the St. Gotthard, down to the French coast, finding often bad weather conditions. This allowed to demonstrate that electric and hybrid vehicles can face different weather and road conditions, testing in particular the batteries.

The team
The team of the City of Modena was formed by 9 men. The team captain is Professor Filippo Sala, teacher of Production Techniques at the technical high school "A. Ferrari" in Maranello (Modena, Italy). Sala was accompanied by 4 of his students and two young engineers. The group was supported by two vans carrying batteries and equipment, driven by two assistants.
The support and the technical experience of the students of the technical high school "A. Ferrari" was essential for the design and creation of all the vehicles.
