The project
AIMS

The aim of the Speed Bike project is the experimentation of a fleet of thirty electro-muscular vehicles which will be used by thirty citizens during 12 months.
The experimentation will allow to test the performances of the vehicles, which will be used daily under different weather and traffic conditions.
Besides, the experimentation will allow to gather the impressions of the users as well as their liking.

PHASES

1. Co-ordination and project management (01/98-12/99)
The City of Modena, being the leader of the project, is in charge with the project management and project co-ordination. This implies:

  • to keep a constant relation with the European Commission
  • to organise regular meetings of the partners of the project
  • to monitor the implementation of the project
  • to draft all the technical and financial reports required by the European Commission.
2. Identification and selection of the areas (02/98-09/98)
Identification and selection of the three areas of the City of Modena which will be equipped to create parking and recharging areas for electro-muscular vehicles. Feasibility assessments for all areas will be made.

3. Identification and selection of the sample of the users (02/98-05/98)
The identification of the thirty users was made through the publication of a public call which specified the necessary requirements.
The selected citizens have signed an agreement with the City of Modena in order to settle all the aspects concerning the experimentation.
The citizens committed themselves:

  • to use the vehicles during their daily transfers, for at least 150 km per month
  • to keep the vehicles in safe places, to avoid theft
  • to take care of the recharge of the batteries.
4.Identification and purchase of the vehicles (02/98-09/98)
The selection of the vehicles that bought by the City of Modena was made on the grounds of a survey and an assessment of the available technologies and vehicles.
The City bought 20 bicycles and 10 tricycles of different brands, in order to compare the different performances.
Each vehicle is equipped with a black box, in order to collect a series of technical information (consumption, speed, km, etc.) which are relevantoto evaluate the different performances.

5. Transport service experimentation (10/98-09/99)
The experimentation started officially on October the 1st. The vehicles were given to the users and they started using them in their transfers.
The City of Modena meets regularly the users to see if there is any problem, difficulty or request.

6. Dissemination of results (01/98-12/99)
The initiatives for the dissemination of the results of the project will take place all through the 24 months of the project:

  • Ex ante awareness campaign:, information and awareness raising activities were implemented in order to involve the citizens in the project.
  • In itinere campaign: during the implementation of the service it will be important to maintain high the level of interest of the citizenship, thanks also to the publication of articles on technical magazines and on local newspapers. Also information material will be published.

  • The City of Modena takes part in initiatives and events both in Italy and abroad to present the project.
A constant flow of information on the project is ensured by constant updating on the web site of the project.
  • Ex post campaign: once the project is over, the City of Modena will organise and host an international conference to present the results achieved by the project as far as technical results are concerned as well as form the point of view of the satisfaction of the users. The conference may be accompanied by an exhibition of electro-muscular vehicles.
EXPECTED RESULTS

The Speed Bike project sets out to test the reliability and success of an alternative means of transport among the citizens of Modena. The project also wishes to encourage a widespread use of such vehicles, in order to help solve some of the problems which daily beset urban life.
Electro-muscular vehicles will have to demonstrate their functionality on urban routes and cycle paths, with a big reduction of physical effort and an increase in the speed of travel, especially in relation to normal bikes.
The project is also the occasion to test photo-voltaic recharging stations and equipped parking areas, to assess the practicality of cycle paths and finally to improve the integration with public transport.
