Priority axis 6 of Emilia-Romagna Regional Operational Programme 2014-2020: regeneration of the former AEM plant and development of an open Laboratory

Priority axis 6 of Emilia-Romagna Regional Operational Programme 2014-2020, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), is focused on the theme “attractive and participated towns”.

In particular, Priority axis 6 aims at implementing the Urban Agenda for the EU which gives towns a central role as regional hubs and foresees regeneration actions of cultural heritage and the implementation of all elements promoting citizens participation to strategic urban decisions, through the use of new ICT.

The City of Modena has obtained funding referred to three main actions of Priority axis 6:

- action 6.7.1 - Investment priority 6c - on protection, promotion and networking of cultural heritage, both material and immaterial one, in strategic attractive areas, in order to strengthen and encourage development processes. Thanks to this action, the City of Modena has regenerated the plant of the former AEM (Municipal Electric Utilities), an industrial archaeological building of 1912 placed in an area, interested by an overall municipal recovery plan, near the old town centre;

- action 2.3.1 - Investment priority 2b - with the aim of providing advanced services and technologies for the creation of “open Laboratories”, places of cooperation and debate among businesses, cities and the Public administration and for a shared work and testing. Within this action, inside the former AEM plant, an open Laboratory has been implemented, that is to say a place for doing business, developing new products, services, technologies; a meeting point for professionals, start-ups and institutions, open to citizens. The new building included two coworking spaces, two Labspaces, a conference room, a multi-purpose gallery of 545 sm and a restaurant point. The open Laboratory, one of the ten historical places requalified thanks to this Priority axis of the Emilia-Romagna Region, has been inaugurated in March 2019 and it is managed by Giacomo Brodolini Foundation of Rome;

- action 6.7.2 - Investment priority 6c - aiming at encouraging promotional strategies of requalified cultural places and of their content, therefore integrating regional promotional strategies, through regional, national and international attractive events.
